LMS Ivatt Class 2 2-6-2T

The LMS Ivatt Class 2 2-6-2T, introduced in 1946, heralded a new era for light mixed-traffic steam locomotives. Designed by H. G. Ivatt and built primarily at Crewe—with the last ten units coming from Derby—this class of 130 engines was developed to replace aging tank engines with a modern, efficient solution. Drawing inspiration from the successful GWR Prairie tanks, Ivatt’s design featured innovative labour-saving measures such as self-emptying ashpans and rocking grates, making these locomotives both economical and reliable on branch line duties.

Nicknamed the “Mickey Mouse Tanks” for their compact and unassuming appearance, these versatile engines quickly became the backbone of LMS and later British Railways’ regional operations. They were widely allocated across the London Midland and Western Regions, handling everything from local passenger services to freight and goods traffic.
