Boxcars

Former Reading Company boxcar CR 231680 stands at the west end of Enola Yard, still wearing its faded Reading green paint in the 1980s. Built by Pullman-Standard in 1972 as one of the Reading’s XLj class 50-foot boxcars (Nos. 20000-20199), the car became Conrail class BR50L following the formation of Conrail in 1976 and was renumbered into the 231597-231795 series. Although carrying Conrail reporting marks, it still displays the distinctive Reading lettering and “DF” Route of the Diamonds herald. © Lynn Wolfe
