Boxcars
Penn Central 50-foot boxcar No. 160478, a former New York Central car classified as 968B, photographed in the former Erie Lackawanna yard at Akron, Ohio, in March 1977. Originally constructed as a 40-foot boxcar, the car was subsequently lengthened by inserting a 10-foot section into the centre of the body, with the modification still visible in the side panels. It retains its distinctive Penn Central green paint scheme, white lettering and large corporate emblem, despite the railroad having been absorbed into Conrail in April 1976. The car was among a string of older boxcars stored in the former Erie Lackawanna yard, which Conrail had largely relegated to storage use following the merger. © Roger Durfee
