The BR Standard Class 4 2-6-0s first appeared on the Somerset & Dorset after a trial run from Bournemouth to Bath on 5 March 1955. Though none were allocated to Bath M.P.D. they ran regularly over the line coming from Eastleigh shed (71A) which provided the motive power for the 1255 Bournemouth – Bath Green Park and the return, 1905 Bath Green Park – Bournemouth.
