The Fd 8656–8665 series were bulk goods wagons (🇩🇪 Schüttgutwagen) delivered in 1965. Numbered 8656 to 8665, the batch comprised ten two-axle wagons intended for the movement of loose materials across the metre-gauge network.
Their short wheelbase and modest axle load made them suitable for routes with tight curvature and steep gradients.
Construction and Entry into Service
The wagons were built by Talbot, Aachen, entering service in March 1965. They were originally classified as OS³ᵗ, later reclassified as Fd, reflecting changes in wagon classification practice rather than any major physical modification.
They were finished in beige, consistent with contemporary freight stock.
Technical Characteristics
The wagons were compact but practical, designed for general bulk traffic rather than a single specialist role:
- Length over buffers: 7,990 mm
- Fixed wheelbase: 4,000 mm
- Tare weight: 7.5 t
- Load volume: 9.0 m³
- Maximum load: 15.0 t
- Maximum speed: 65–70 km/h
Braking was by the automatic vacuum brake with a hand brake.
Operational Use
The wagons were used for general loose materials, including aggregates, sand, and similar bulk loads. While visually similar to ballast wagons (🇩🇪 Schotterwagen), they were not dedicated permanent-way vehicles and could be deployed flexibly as required.
Reclassification and Later Use
In 2004, the wagons were reclassified (🇩🇪 Umzeichnung) into the Xc series, becoming Xc 9416–9425 respectively, indicating transfer to departmental use (🇩🇪 Bahndienstfahrzeuge).
In 2010, Xc 9416–9420 were sold to the Montreux–Oberland Bernois (MOB), where they were reclassified as Fdk 905–909 and continued in service.
Modelling
The Fd / OS³ᵗ self-discharging wagons (🇩🇪 Selbstentladewagen) are well covered in H0m by Bemo, making them an easy inclusion on layouts set from the mid-1960s through to the early twenty-first century.
Bemo has produced several versions corresponding to individual wagons within the 8656–8665 number block, covering both the original OS³ᵗ classification and the later Fd designation. Models are available in a range of finishes reflecting real-world conditions and repainting practice, including brown (🇩🇪 braun), ochre (🇩🇪 ocker), and heavily weathered ochre/rust (🇩🇪 ocker/rost) schemes.
