BR Standard 3 2-6-2T

Designed to navigate lines with a 16-ton axle limit, the BR Standard 3 tanks filled a vital niche in Riddles’ vision for standardizing locomotives. The first batch rolled out of Swindon Works in 1952, followed by subsequent delays due to post-war steel shortages. Despite facing challenges, they found their purpose until the rise of Diesel Multiple Units (DMUs) gradually eroded their domain. This, coupled with cancelled production batches, resulted in a modest fleet of forty-five engines instead of the planned sixty-three.

The lineage of the BR Standard 3 tanks diverged from the LMS-based design philosophy adopted for other Standard classes. Crafted in Swindon, these locomotives boasted an improved Swindon No. 2 boiler and LMS-inspired underframe, combining efficiency with versatility. Their 5′ 3″ driving wheels and 21,490 lbs tractive effort ensured spirited performance, albeit limited by a relatively modest 1500-gallon water capacity.
