LMS Class 2P 4-4-0

The London Midland and Scottish Railway (LMS) Class 2P 4-4-0 represents a notable class of steam locomotives designed primarily for light passenger duties. Introduced in 1928, this class was an evolution of the Midland Railway 483 Class, featuring modified dimensions and reduced boiler mountings. In 1933, locomotives numbered 633 and 653 were equipped with Dabeg feedwater heaters. Following nationalisation in 1948, British Railways prefixed the remaining 136 engines with “40000” to their numbers. Gradual withdrawals occurred between 1954 and 1962, leading to the eventual scrapping of all locomotives in this class.

On January 1st, 1930, all S&D locomotives lost their identity and were absorbed into LMS stock for which new numbers were quickly allocated. S&D Nos.44, 45, and 46 became LMS Nos.633, 634, and 635 (taking the next vacant numbers after the most recently constructed LMS loco, No.632).
