Maine Central EMD GP38 No. 260 leads a typical early Guilford Transportation Industries locomotive mix as an eastbound Boston & Maine manifest passes through East Deerfield, Massachusetts, on a humid August day in 1984. At the time, GTI had recently absorbed the Maine Central, Boston & Maine, and Delaware & Hudson railroads, creating a thoroughly intermingled fleet before its distinctive slate grey and orange livery became widespread. The photograph captures a transitional moment between the proud regional identities and the emerging Guilford era. © Mark Hinsdale
