ADM Freight Cars

During the late 1970s and early 1980s, Archer Daniels Midland (ADM) was one of North America’s largest agricultural processors, handling vast quantities of grain, oilseeds, sweeteners, vegetable oils and industrial chemicals. Moving these commodities required an extensive rail fleet, with covered hoppers carrying products such as corn, soybeans and meal, while tank cars transported vegetable oils, corn syrup, chemicals and other liquid products.

ADMX series 80056-80165 built by American Car & Foundry Feb-1981 to Mar-81.

“Early one morning in September 1983 the local out of Danville Junction crossed the Androscoggin River bridge between Auburn and Lewiston, about to arrive at the Lewiston Upper yard on the “Back Road” mainline. Chopnose GP7 number 593 is in the lead, with historic repaint GP7 number 572 trailing, as the still water of the diversion canal provides a nearly perfect reflection.”

Covered Hoppers

Built by American Car & Foundry in March 1982 as part of the ADMX 85001-85250 series, ADMX 85002 is a 5,250 cubic foot Center Flow covered hopper designed for grain and other dry bulk commodities. Finished in ADM’s distinctive blue livery with the diamond logo, the car is seen at Goshen, California, in 1986, representing a class that became a familiar sight across North America’s agricultural rail network. © John O’Malley
Built by Pullman-Standard in October 1966 as part of Lot 9149, TLDX 6588 is one of a fleet of 75 covered hoppers leased to ADM. The 4,427 cubic foot car carries the simplified ADM lettering and logo introduced during a 1973 repaint, replacing the earlier large bolt-on emblem. It is seen at Shafter, California, on 6 June 1976. © Steve Vincent
Fresh from the paint shop, UELX 60118 stands out in ADM’s striking blue livery at Jackson, Mississippi, in 1979. The 5,750 cubic foot three-bay covered hopper was one of the UELX 60000-60044 series built by United States Railway Equipment between October 1977 and March 1978 and leased to ADM for grain service. © Eric Werner
Built by Evans in June 1979, UELX 65019 is a 4,780 cubic foot three-bay covered hopper leased to Tabor Grain Company, an ADM subsidiary acquired in 1975. The car carries both the TABOR GRAIN CO. lettering and ADM’s distinctive “molecule” logo, reflecting the close relationship between the two companies. It is seen at Belen, New Mexico, in 1987. © John O’Malley
