Ashley, Drew & Northern Freight Cars

Boxcars

Nearly new Ashley, Drew & Northern per diem box car ADN 7759 rides westbound through Cajon, California, on 30 September 1977, only a few months after emerging from the Evans-US Railway Equipment plant. Built in June 1977 as part of the ADN 7700–7799 series, the car still carries immaculate dark green paint, crisp white lettering and an unblemished sliding door, presenting a stark contrast to the weathered freight equipment around it. Cars like these reflected the late-1970s boom in per diem boxcars, with shortlines and leasing interests generating daily revenue by supplying modern freight equipment for interchange service across North America. © Ron Hawkins
ADN 7711, a weathered Evans-USRE 50ft 6in box car from the Ashley, Drew & Northern fleet, rolls through El Centro, California, on 30 May 1993. Built in May 1977 as part of the ADN 7700–7799 series, the car still wears its faded olive-green paint and large “Ashley, Drew & Northern” lettering, though years of hard service have left the sliding door scarred and rust-streaked. The contrast between the battered door and the relatively intact herald gives the car a distinctly late-era shortline appearance typical of 1990s freight service. © Steve Vincent
