Atlantic Coast Line 50-foot boxcar No. 38473, a Pullman-Standard Class O-38 car built in December 1965, travels westbound on a Conrail freight at Adams Station, New Jersey, in September 1981. Part of the ACL 38305–38789 series, these 70-ton boxcars had a capacity of 4,922 cubic feet and were originally constructed for general merchandise service. Despite the formation of the Seaboard Coast Line Railroad in 1967, No. 38473 still carries its original Atlantic Coast Line maroon paint scheme, complete with the distinctive circular herald and large “Thanks for Using Coast Line” slogan. The partially open sliding door and prominent “DF” marking, indicating Damage-Free loading equipment, add to the character of this surviving example of pre-merger freight equipment. © Barry Trogu
