Chicago, Burlington & Quincy 40ft 50-ton boxcar CB&Q 61111 stands at West Colton, California, on 3 March 1977. Built in June 1953 at Burlington’s Havelock shops, the car is part of the CB&Q 60000–61499 series, featuring a 6ft sliding door and a capacity of 3,898 cubic feet. It carries the classic “Way of the Zephyrs” slogan alongside the Burlington Route herald, a paint scheme that remained visible on interchange freight several years after the formation of Burlington Northern. © Steven Vincent
Chicago, Burlington & Quincy 40ft 50-ton boxcar CB&Q 61327 stands at Selkirk, New York, on 7 October 1978. Built in June 1953 at Burlington’s Havelock shops, the car is part of the CB&Q 60000–61499 series, featuring a 6ft sliding door and a capacity of 3,898 cubic feet. Still carrying the bold “Burlington” lettering and Route herald, it illustrates how pre-merger CB&Q equipment remained in service well into the Burlington Northern era, often far from its Midwestern origins. © Jack D.
