Box Cars
Erie 50ft 6in 50-ton double-door boxcar ERIE 66742 stands in a freight consist at Allentown, Pennsylvania, on 24 March 1978. Built January 1956 by General American Transportation Corporation, the car is part of the ERIE 66700–66774 series and has a capacity of 4,833 cubic feet. Its double doors and high cubic capacity made it suitable for bulky, palletised loads, and it survives here in faded Erie lettering several years after the formation of Erie Lackawanna, illustrating the longevity of pre-merger freight equipment in interchange service. © Jack D.
