Erie Lackawanna 40-foot boxcar No. 54405, from the 54000–55899 series, photographed at Akron, Ohio, in August 1978. Originally built for the Delaware, Lackawanna & Western Railroad, the car retains its faded Erie Lackawanna maroon paint scheme but carries a replacement sliding door salvaged from a former Reading Company boxcar, complete with the large black “D” from Reading’s distinctive billboard lettering. Fitted during the early Conrail years, the mismatched door illustrates the practical approach to freight car maintenance following the consolidation of several northeastern railroads in 1976. Other details include the removed roofwalk, shortened ladders and a yellow wheel inspection dot, all characteristic of the period. © Roger Durfee
