Illinois Central Gulf 40ft 6in hi-cube boxcar ICG 480069 stands in Barstow, California, on 10 May 1975. Built by Pullman-Standard in November 1967 as Illinois Central No. 15469, the car was part of a 20-car series later renumbered into the ICG 480050–480069 series. Its bright orange paint scheme and oversized “Split Rail” logo made these distinctive 4,900 cubic foot boxcars a conspicuous sight far from home rails. © Ron Hawkins

Brand-new Illinois Central Gulf gondola No. 245714 sits sidelined at North English, Iowa, in 1978 after its load apparently shifted in transit. Built that year at ICG’s Centralia Shops as part of the 245550–245749 series, these 52ft 6in, 100-ton gondolas had a capacity of 2,000 cubic feet and were intended for a variety of bulk and industrial loads. © Nicholas L. Covered Hoppers

Illinois Central Gulf covered hopper No. 755164 stands in Southern Railway’s yard at Columbus, Georgia, during the early 1980s. Built by General American Transportation Corporation between December 1966 and March 1967 as part of the Illinois Central series 56300–56799, the car later became part of ICG’s 755000–755499 series. Designed as a revised Dry-Flo covered hopper for bulk dry commodities, the car carries the distinctive Illinois Central Gulf corporate image introduced following the 1972 merger. © Bob Freitag
Illinois Central Gulf covered hoppers Nos. 765906 and 765813 cross the bridge above Clyde Yard in Chicago, Illinois, in June 1979. Built by Pullman-Standard in late 1973 as part of the ICG 765700–765999 series, these 100-ton covered hoppers featured a 4,750-cubic-foot capacity and were commonly used in grain and other bulk commodity service.
