Boxcars
Missouri–Kansas–Texas 40ft 50-ton boxcar MKT 92483, built November 1956 by American Car & Foundry (Lot 4726), stands at Lewiston, Maine, in 1978, still carrying its original “The Katy – Serving the Great Southwest” paint scheme. Part of the MKT 92301–92650 series, these 40ft 6in cars were fitted with 6ft sliding doors and had a capacity of 3,895 cubic feet, with a nailable steel floor section for general merchandise traffic. The car is loaded with cotton waste for Bates Manufacturing, whose mill buildings form the backdrop, a reminder of the long-distance reach of southwestern equipment into New England industry. Reweighed April 1977. © George Melvin
