New Haven boxcar NH 40600 sits weathered but still carrying its bold NH “McGinnis” herald in June 1979. Built by Pullman-Standard in January 1965 as one of just six cars in the 40600-40605 series, the 75-ton, 50-foot-6-inch boxcars featured cushioned underframes, 9-foot plug doors, and 4,952 cubic feet of capacity for high-value, damage-sensitive freight. Although the New Haven Railroad had disappeared into Penn Central a decade earlier, cars such as this continued to roam North American rails for many years in their original paint. © Andy Benfer Collection
