Moose River Bridge (130.25)

Maine Central EMD GP38 no. 259 leads freight YR-1 out of St Johnsbury, Vermont, on 10 May 1981, followed by U18B no. 400 General Henry Knox and no. 407 Unity. The 47-car train accelerates across the Moose River bridge in a haze of dust, heading west for the Mountain Division. A classic small-town New England scene, with the grade crossing and roadside traffic framing Maine Central’s everyday freight operations. © Chuck Schwesinger
Maine Central GP38 no. 257 leads an eastbound freight across the Moose River at the US Route 2 crossing in St. Johnsbury, Vermont, on 16 May 1982, with GP7 no. 562 and additional power trailing. The train has just departed St. Johnsbury and is beginning its climb toward Whitefield and Crawford Notch en route to Rigby Yard, Portland. Dust and exhaust hang in the air as the consist crosses the timber-deck bridge, a familiar scene in the final years of regular through service on the Mountain Division. © Bruce Macdonald
