Boxcars

Burlington Northern 40ft boxcar BN 162145 stands at City of Industry, California, on 1 June 1978. Built by Great Northern’s St. Cloud shops in 1951, the car was one of a large group inherited by Burlington Northern following the 1970 merger. The weathered green paint, large BN logo and open sliding door provide a typical view of a veteran general-service boxcar still handling interchange traffic nearly three decades after construction. © Ron Hawkins
Burlington Northern boxcar BN 189451 stands at Aragon, Hidalgo, Mexico, on 2 March 1982. Originally built by the Chicago, Burlington & Quincy Railroad at its Havelock shops between 1942 and 1948, the car was rebuilt in 1970 and renumbered into Burlington Northern’s 189000-series. The large BN logo contrasts with the weathered green paintwork, illustrating how these rebuilt 40ft boxcars continued to see widespread interchange service well into the 1980s. © Matt Herson
Burlington Northern boxcar BN 189729 is seen at West Colton, California, on 20 March 1982. Built by the Chicago, Burlington & Quincy Railroad at its Havelock shops during the 1940s and later rebuilt for continued service, the car carries Burlington Northern’s large merger-era logo and weathered green paint scheme. The open door reveals the empty interior of a boxcar that, despite its age, remained active in interchange freight service more than three decades after construction. © Ron Hawkins
Burlington Northern double-door boxcar BN 190011 stands at Spuyten Duyvil, New York, in January 1980. Originally built by Northern Pacific at its Brainerd shops in 1959–60, the car was rebuilt by Burlington Northern at St. Cloud during 1975–76, receiving double sliding doors to improve loading access. The rebuilt car retains Burlington Northern’s distinctive cascade green paint scheme and large corporate logo, representing the continuing use of modernised 40ft boxcars in general merchandise service during the late 1970s and early 1980s. © Matt Herson
Burlington Northern boxcar BN 198669 is seen at Marble Hill, New York, on 6 July 1979. Built by Great Northern’s St. Cloud shops in June 1956, the 3,977 cubic foot boxcar became part of Burlington Northern’s fleet following the 1970 merger. Still carrying its cascade green paint and large white BN logo, the car represents the thousands of 40ft boxcars that continued to handle general merchandise traffic long after larger freight car designs had become common. © Matt Herson
Burlington Northern boxcar BN 198897 stands at Fullerton, California, on 22 June 1977. Built by Great Northern’s St. Cloud shops in 1955, the 40ft boxcar became part of the Burlington Northern fleet following the 1970 merger. The car carries the railroad’s cascade green paint scheme and bold white corporate markings, while its age and weathering reflect the continued use of thousands of inherited boxcars in North American interchange service during the 1970s. © Ron Hawkins
