Pennsylvania Freight Cars

Pennsylvania Railroad 40-foot boxcar No. 71061 crosses Front Street in South Plainfield, New Jersey, on former Lehigh Valley Railroad trackage operated by Conrail in July 1981. More than five years after the formation of Conrail, the car still carries its weathered Pennsylvania Railroad lettering and distinctive white keystone emblem, a reminder of the railroad’s earlier identity. A Buffalo Creek Railroad boxcar is visible to the left, while black tank car AMCX No. 20005 follows immediately behind. The grade crossing, protected by flashing lights and a striped barrier, provides a characteristic scene of northeastern railroad operations during the early Conrail era. © Barry Trogu
